Agonistic behaviour and feed efficiency in juvenile Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus ArchiMer
De Verdal, Hugues; O'Connell, Catherine Maeve; Mekkawy, Wagdy; Vandeputte, Marc; Chatain, Beatrice; Bégout, Marie-laure; Benzie, John A.h..
Given the strong effects of behavioural hierarchies on growth in many cultured species and the key role of feed efficiency in aquaculture economics, understanding the nature of the interaction of these variables is important for the sustainability of aquaculture. The relationship between agonistic behaviour, growth and feed efficiency in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was studied by rearing 120 fish in eight aquaria. Fish were video-recorded to estimate the occurrence of agonistic behaviour during a fasting and a refeeding period. Growth, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency (FCE - calculated as the inverse of feed conversion ratio (FCR)) were subsequently measured individually for each fish. Fish showed 58% less agonistic traits during the...

Identities among actin-encoding cDNAs of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and other eukaryote species revealed by nucleotide and amino acid sequence analyses Genet. Mol. Biol.
Poletto,Andréia B.; Wasko,Adriane P.; Oliveira,Claudio; Azevedo,Alexandre; Carvalho,Robson F.; Silva,Maeli Dal Pai; Foresti,Fausto; Martins,Cesar.
Actin-encoding cDNAs of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were isolated by RT-PCR using total RNA samples of different tissues and further characterized by nucleotide sequencing and in silico amino acid (aa) sequence analysis. Comparisons among the actin gene sequences of O. niloticus and those of other species evidenced that the isolated genes present a high similarity to other fish and other vertebrate actin genes. The highest nucleotide resemblance was observed between O. niloticus and O. mossambicus a-actin and b-actin genes. Analysis of the predicted aa sequences revealed two distinct types of cytoplasmic actins, one cardiac muscle actin type and one skeletal muscle actin type that were expressed in different tissues of Nile tilapia. The...

Oxidative stress biomarkers and aggressive behavior in fish exposed to aquatic cadmium contamination Neotropical Ichthyology
Almeida,Jeane A.; Barreto,Rodrigo E.; Novelli,Ethel L. B.; Castro,Fabio J.; Moron,Sandro E..
The objective of this study was to investigate the possible link between cadmium exposure, hepatic markers of oxidative stress and aggressive behavior in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish were first exposed to 0.75 mg/L CdCl2 for 15 days (12 isolated fish for each group) and afterward a behavioral test was performed. Fish from the control and cadmium-exposed groups were paired for 1 h (6 pairs of fish per group) for determination of aggressiveness parameters. Immediately after the behavioral test, the animals were sacrificed and the liver was used to determine biochemical parameters. Cadmium decreased aggression in Nile tilapia. Subordinate animals exposed to cadmium showed decreased glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity compared to dominant...

Partial molecular characterization of the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) alpha-cardiac muscle actin gene and its relationship to actin isoforms of other fish species Genet. Mol. Biol.
Wasko,Adriane P.; Severino,Fábio E.; Presti,Flávia T.; Poletto,Andréia B.; Martins,Cesar.
An alpha actin gene segment, isolated from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), was characterized by nucleotide sequencing, predicted amino acid sequence and Southern blot hybridization. Genomic DNA amplification resulted in a 1063-bp fragment corresponding to a partial alpha-cardiac muscle actin gene containing exons 3 to 6. Southern blot analysis of the restriction-digested DNA revealed that the Nile tilapia genome contains multiple muscle actin isoforms. Although comparison of the nucleotide sequence, amino acid residues and exon-intron organization of the isolated actin gene with those of other vertebrates showed a high level of identity, diagnostic amino acid residues can still be correlated to distinct actin genes in fish species.

Physiological determinants of individual variation in sensitivity to an organophosphate pesticide in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus ArchiMer
Mckenzie, David; Blasco, Felipe R.; Belao, Thiago C.; Killen, Shaun S.; Martins, Nathan D.; Taylor, Edwin W.; Tadeu Rantin, F..
Individual variation in sub-lethal sensitivity to the organophosphate pesticide trichlorfon was investigated in Nile tilapia, using critical swimming speed (U-crit) as an indicator. Tilapia exposed for 96 h to 500 mu g l-1 trichlorfon at 26 degrees C (Tcfn group, n = 27) showed a significant decline in mean U-crit, compared to their own control (pre-exposure) performance in clean water (-14.5 +/- 2.3%, mean +/- SEM), but also compared to a Sham group (n = 10) maintained for 96 h in clean water. Individuals varied in their relative sensitivity to the pesticide, with the decline in U-crit after exposure varying from 1 to 41%. The U-crit of the Tcfn group did not recover completely after 96 h in clean water, remaining 9.4 +/- 3.2% below their own control...

Sex-specific compensatory growth in food-deprived Nile tilapia BJMBR
Barreto,R.E.; Moreira,P.S.A.; Carvalho,R.F..
Female Nile tilapia incubate fertilized eggs in their mouth until they are released as alevins. Consequently, the female may not eat during this period. Thus, it would be expected that female Nile tilapia are more adapted to recovering from fasting than males, which do not display this behavior. To test this hypothesis we conducted an experiment with two groups of fish consisting of 7 males and 7 females each, with one fish per aquarium. The experiment was divided into three phases involving adjustment of the animals to experimental aquaria (0-15th day), fasting (16th-27th day), and refeeding (27th-42nd day). Compensatory growth performance was assessed by specific growth rate, weight, food conversion efficiency and food intake. Food conversion efficiency...

VALIDATION OF THE ACETO-CARMINE TECHNIQUE FOR EVALUATING PHENOTYPIC SEX IN NILE TILAPIA (Oreochromis niloticus) FRY Ciência Rural
Wassermann,Gustavo Javier; Afonso,Luís Orlando Bertolla.
In this study a method for evaluating phenotypic sex in Nile tilapia was validated. A technique that uses aceto-carmine squash mounts to stain the entire gonadal tissue for microscopic examination (Method 2- squash mounts) was compared with a technique based on traditional histology. Approximately 2600 Nile tilapia fry weighing and measuring, respectively, between 0.25-2.50g and 26-53mm, aged 35 to 60 days after hatch (DAH), were sexed using this methodology. In situ microscopic examination on the gonads was also performed. A reliable sexing using squash mount was possible with fish weighing more than 0.500g, 45-47 DAH. Results from microscopic observation using the aceto-carmine stain coincided 100% with the histological examination. Male gonadal tissue...
